WLAN (wireless local area networks) are an incredibly popular and exciting advance in technology within the world of information technology. The ability to share not only a single, but multiple networks without being placed in a static location of being hardwired into a network, is something which has afforded much usability and convenience within the office and of course at home. The development of WLAN components has led to a lot of organizations choosing to go wireless, simply because it saves a lot of cost and hassle involved with running network cables all over the office environment. A wireless network is often a great deal more cost effective than typical LAN ones. Some of the typical WLAN components, which will constitute as being the essential parts of a wireless local area network are the router, network cards, and bridges. Let us look at a one building environment for example. Essentially the main Ethernet connection will enter the building and be controlled by the server. From this hardwired starting point of the network, the connection will then be passed along to a WLAN router. This is point from which the wireless signal will get sent out across the room, being limited by the router’s inherent range. The WLAN router will be the main controlling force behind the wireless local area network, for its operation will control the amount of incoming and outgoing packets of data. If you are building a WLAN network, then the wireless network cards are the WLAN components which will be distributed among the computers. Each station will need one of the wireless network cards, in order to receive the main signal. These will either be a PCI card for a PC or PCMCIA cards for laptops. Most laptops purchased today will come as being wireless network connectivity ready. It is through these access points which the PC will be able to connect to the router, and therefore the main server. It is more than feasible to have several access points controlling different networks within one place. Network cards should simply be plug and play devices which will run off default settings. All information will be passed through this main access point of the network which is the router. This is one of the key WLAN components, as it will handle all traffic, whether it is one computer talking to another, or to the main server itself. This wireless distribution service is the most popular form of wireless connectivity, but there are other types of connection for specific tasks. Two computers for instance, can talk directly each other through an ad-hoc peer to peer connection. The reliability and speed of wide wireless networks is something which is backed up by security protocols. The better the quality of the WLAN components, then the more efficiency and productivity you should be able to expect from them.
